I visited a local bottle shop today known for occasionally having vintage brews in their cooler. I don’t think they realize it, because they are always priced at the same amount the new ones are at, but I’m not complaining. There was a bottle of Anchor Brewing’s Our Special Ale from 2009, and I snagged it up for only 2$.
I’m a big fan of the 2011 version of this brew, and have a couple down in the cellar that I hope will age well. The recipe is different every year, so it’s great to taste and note the changes ever year during the holidays.
I cracked open the 09 and poured it into some Boulevard glassware I just got for Christmas. I gotta say, it’s amazing how fresh this pours, plenty of head and carbonation. It really tastes fresh too honestly, not a huge difference from the 2011 bottle I had at Christmas dinner. But I will say that this baby is better than a fresh batch, and gives me high hopes for the fresh ones I have in the cellar. My only regret is not aging this for another year or two actually, really impressed with how it tastes now.
Sweet malty molasses!

Age it or don’t age it???
Age it people, buy a sixer of the 2011 now if you still can and sit on that baby until a Christmas future.
